Thomas Buchanan's letters to his wife Nancy describe the voyage from New York to San Francisco by way of Panama and his work in the office of the port surveyor at San Francisco. There is information on Lola Montez, a fellow passenger, visits to Dr. William Gwin, and to Mariano Vallejo, and Dr. Gwin's duel with a Mr. M'Corkle. The collection also contains a letter of recommendation from John A. Monroe to Congressman Maurice of New York. 18 letters (84 p.).
